**ADDITION**

Practice adding objects. (part + part = whole)

5 noodles + 6 noodles = 11 noodles (A good conversation during dinner!)

7 green beans + 1 more = 8 green beans

4 cars + 3 cars = 7 cars (good conversation while driving or in a parking lot!)

**ADDITION with regrouping**

(Regrouping is when you have to trade or "regroup" with another place value.)

When you add 34 + 47, you start with the ones place. 4+7 = 11. The 11 will need regrouped or "split" because 11 can make a group of ten. Carry the 1 that's in the tens place over to the tens and bring down the1 that's in the one place to become part of your answer.

Now you'd have the tens place to add. 3+4 and the 1 you moved over from the previous answer would make 8. 34+47 = 81.

**SUBTRACTION**

*How many are left?
*Aaron has 10 golf balls. He hit 2 into the woods. How many does he have left?

10 - 2 = 8 golf balls left

*Finding the "missing part"*

Melissa has 8 markers. 5 markers are washable. The "rest" are not. How many markers are NOT washable markers. (8 - 5 = 3 not washable)

*This is a hard concept since they are used to adding two amounts together, with some extra practice, they will be able to figure out if they are supposed to subtract or add amounts.*

*Using subtraction to COMPARE.*

Mandy has 10 crayons. Bryce has 5 crayons.

How many more crayons does Mandy have than Bryce?

"Remember* Ask yourself: Are they tied? Who has more? How many more?"

If you show how they are tied, then you can see how many Mandy still has.

OR subtract 10 - 5 = 5

**GRAPHS**

***Don't forget, it's fun to make graphs, but it's MORE important to ask questions about them!*

**Picture Graphs **-when we draw pictures in a line to show an amount (Fun at home: Make a picture graph of different colored shirts in your drawer/closet. What color to do you have the most of? least of?)

**Bar Graphs**- when you color in a bar/number of blocks to show amounts (Fun at home: Make a bar graph of how old your family members are. Who's the oldest? Who's the youngest? How much older is ____ than ____?) (Make a bar graph of different pets. How many dogs? How many cats? How many____? How many more _____ than _____?)

**Tally charts**- When you're counting, make tally marks to count. "Don't forget to close the GATE when you get to 5 tally marks. It makes it easier to count when you can count by 5's" (Fun at home: Count your clothes - How many shirts do you own? pants? socks? shoes?)

**GEOMETRY/SHAPES**

Review shape names and try looking for some in restaurants, driving down the road, or in your home.

Plane Shape Names (Simple Shapes): circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, rhombus (diamond), trapezoid, pentagon (5 sides), hexagon (6sides), octagon (8 sides)

Solid Shapes (3D Shapes): sphere (ball), cube, pyramid, rectangular prism
