Word Ring Words: Use these like flash cards.  Students need to recognize these “by sight”!

Point to the Parts of the Book: and tell why they are important.

  • Front & back cover – to protect the book.

  • Spine – holds book together.

  • Title – the name of the story.

  • Title Page – is there in case the cover gets torn.

  • Author – writes the story words.

  • Illustrator – draws the pictures.

Picture Walk:  Students should look at the pictures and tell what they see happening.

Helpful Hints & Helping Hand:  Use while your child is reading and if they have a tricky word.

Comprehension Questions:  Check for deeper understanding by asking these questions:

  • Characters- Who or What the story is about.

  • Setting- Where and When story took place.

  • Plot- What happened at the beginning, middle and end of the story.

  • Problem- was there a problem in the story?

  • Solution- did the problem get solved, if so, how?

    • Close story and have your child RETELL as much about the story as they can from the beginning to its end.

    • AND THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO DO IS MARK HOW YOUR CHILD READ, DATE & SIGN THE NIGHTLY FORM !!!

    • If you do some or all of these things as part of a routine, your child will have a great support base and develop super reading strategies!!!!
